Founded in 2001, the DRAA is a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization. The Association provides community services to stimulate interest and to promote and increase knowledge in astronomy and related sciences, acquires and maintains equipment, libraries and other property necessary for the pursuit of its aims, and makes contributions and renders assistance to individuals and institutions engaged in the study and advancement of astronomy. The Association is primarily focused around amateur astronomy activities, but welcomes professional astronomers as well. 

Regular monthly meetings and scheduled public stargazing events throughout the Region provide the Association's members and the public the opportunity to share and communicate all aspects of astronomy with one another.
